Back Pain Treatment NYC

Spine Health, through a recent facebook post, talked about Chiropractic care and how it is has been named as the best profession for treating lower back pain.

Chiropractic has been around for well over 100 years and has a great track record for safe, effective treatment, especially when it comes to the lower back. Recently a Cochrane stud found chiropractic treatment to be as effective as traditional treatment for back pain. Since traditional treatment relies heavily on drug therapy, it simply may be asking the end result of an underlying injury, condition, or deformity, instead of correcting the cause of the pain.

Chiropractors often also provide additional treatment protocols as the treatment regimen calls for it or when the patient’s response to a treatment changes or is reduced. At Living Well Medical there are many treatment options available as a part of an integrated, individualized treatment protocol that produces results.

How Do I Know if I Have a Herniated Disc?

We usually discourage self diagnosis, it often drives patients a little nuts. If you go and google whatever unusual symptoms you are having right now, you might find 20 different issues that may be causing you distress. It also depends on the individual’s mindset weather they will think positive and take every piece of information under consideration, or if they are out looking for the worst possible diagnosis the internet can provide. In the end it could just turn out to be an undiagnosed allergy, or some other issue you didn’t even think you had. Sometimes people just get worked up about a short term illness and prolong the duration of the symptoms through anxiety. Anxiety from not having an answer can sometimes outlast the issue itself.

That said, it would also be kind of mean to leave you with no help on this subject. Remember that no online expert or check list can help you pinpoint your ailment or injury with 100% certainty.  Only a qualified medical professional can assess you and provide a proper treatment protocol.

We often get patients that come in with a lot of preexisting concerns, and self diagnosis, fear and anxiety. Sometimes they are convinced that their condition is far worst that we diagnose it to be. A lot of this is due to the research they perform online. Online information is a great, and very valuable source of information and can help alleviate concerns and provide some support when someone has been suffering from a condition for a long time, like sciatica.

We see a lot of patients suffering from back pain, and are considered experts in the treatment of pain. Herniated, or bulging discs do have some common symptoms, the obvious one is, of course, back pain. Radiating pain, which goes down the leg or arm, you may be suffering from sciatica, which can mean that a nerve is being impinged by a bulging spinal disc, and pain from sudden movements like coughing , or sneezing can also mean that a disc may be herniated or bulging. Weakness of the limbs, and loss of sensation like in the foot can also be signs of an underlying disc issue.

Sudden trauma can cause herniated discs, but in most cases this occurs from  general wear and tear and long term problems like misalignments. Not everyone who has herniated discs will show symptoms or experience pain. Most people may have herniated discs and it wont interfere with their lives and cause loss of limb function radiating pain etc.

How Do I Fix it?

Well you have to go see a doctor. A Chiropractor would be the obvious choice when it comes to treating the causes of back pain. The Chiropractic profession specializes in treating muscular and skeletal issues surrounding the spine, and reduces interference with the nervous system, like when a nerve is impinged, allowing the body to function normally. Some patients may require spinal decompression to treat their condition if they are not responding well to other treatments like physical therapy.

We offer a lot of different treatment protocols for treating a vast range of painful conditions. We use Massage Therapy, Physical Therapy, the Graston Technique, Cold Laser Therapy, Acupuncture, GaitScan analysis, Kinesio Taping, among other methods to create a personalized treatment plan for each patient.
